Once I started learning about the dangers of using neuro-toxic chemical-based cleaners in my home, I came up against a few challenges. First I tried purchasing more natural products. But they’re super expensive, and some of them didn’t perform as well as I had expected. So I started searching out DIY recipes, and that’s when the real frustration began! I tried a few, purchasing several ingredients I had never heard of, spending the time to put it all together, only to find that it, too, didn’t perform well.
It’s frustrating to waste time and money looking for the right solution. And then I found liquid castile soap. It’s become a bare-bones solution to a whole lot of things in the Gordon household. I buy it in bulk and always have it on hand to make cleaning and beauty products.
One of my favorite recipes is for a multi-purpose cleaner that I use for counters, bathrooms, spot-cleaning the floor, etc. I love it because it’s CHEAP, I don’t have to make 10 gallons at a time, and it takes only a minute or two to make more when I run out.
- 16 oz distilled water
- 1/2 tsp borax
- 1/2 tsp washing soda
- 1 tsp liquid castile soap
- 15-20 drops essential oils preferred- I use 10 drops orange, 5 drops lemon, and 5 drops either lavender or bergamot
- Add 2 cups warm water to a glass spray bottle.
- Add borax, washing soda and soap.
- Put lid on and shake well.
